Those who oppose the Obama Recovery Plan go on and on about bailing out "losers" who are upside down with home mortgages.

Admittedly, there’s no information on how that statistic was calculated, but those economists who say that today’s recession is nothing like the Great Depression. The cartoon probably would not be offensive if the US population were homogeneous - all with the same origins and history. Then a monkey would be just a monkey, after all. But America is a complex stew of peoples who have emigrated from all over the world, some by choice and some in chains. To understand the reason for protests requires awareness of the African-American history over 400 years in this country - and just a little empathy.

There is a long history of equating African-Americans with monkeys. It dates back to the the beginnings of our country and was used to reinforce the popularly-held, but mistaken idea that blacks were inferior or sub-human. It has continued even during the recent election. We've all seen the Obama for President shirts with the "Curious George" monkey holding a banana.

Did the cartoonist INTEND to depict President Obama as a bullet-riddled chimpanzee? It doesn't matter. Due to the long history of racist caricaturization in this country - an artist, a singer, a comedian, an author, etc. must exercise common sense and avoid any derogatory connotation that might come to some minds.

Rev. Al Sharpton is correct and his expressed outrage is appropriate.

A veteran economist and a rookie economist are walking down the road. They come across a spoiled apple lying on the asphalt. Says the veteran economist, "If you eat it, I'll give you $20,000!"

The rookie economist runs his optimization model and figures out that he's better off eating it. He does so and collects the money.

Continuing along the same road, they almost step on a spoiled banana. The rookie economist states, "Now, if you eat that banana, I'll give you $20,000." After evaluating the proposal, the veteran economist eats the spoiled fruit, and soon collects the money.

As they continue walking, the rookie economist starts thinking and states, "Listen. We both have the same amount of money we had before, but we both ate spoiled fruit. I don't see us being better off."

Replies the veteran economist, "Well that's true, but you overlook the fact that we've just been involved in $40,000 of trade."

This sent Friedman into a little tizzy, and he came over and pounded on the table, demanding an answer to a question he had just posed to the class. Michelle, now awake, said, "I'm sorry, Professor. I missed the question, but the answer is increase the money supply."

...I do not always like everything Israel does. I do not always like everything my own country does. But I love Israel for the determination and courage of its people in standing up to the terrorists who would destroy it. And I detest those who traffic in anti-Semitism and then seek to excuse their hatred of me by saying no, it isn't Jews they hate. Just Israel. Liars.

...No one likes seeing civilians suffer and die. No one likes seeing hospitals overrun, supplies running out, doctors near exhaustion. But terrorists who use schools and hospitals as launching pads for attacks should not complain when the bombs hit the targets they have created. No one likes to see children die, but so-called leaders who use their children as pawns and train them to kill should not expect sympathy when the lives they risk so carelessly are then lost.

... It is not the answer to sit back and let the rockets rain down. It is not the answer to let terrorists attack you and not fight back.

We will not go back to the ovens. Israel was the answer to the ovens, and if Israel is your enemy, so am I.

The question never seems to be raised: what if Russia's neighbors are occasionally in the wrong? … Is Georgia justified in forcing the issue of a separatist region with arms rather than negotiations?

…From Russia's perspective, how does it look to have NATO not only expanded into the Ukrainian heartland, but also to its southern border in Georgia? Would the U.S. be comfortable with a Chinese or Russian military advisors on the ground in Mexico and Venezuela? Or even just a radar base that could track every American aircraft all the way to the Canadian border? And why is it necessary to further humiliate a former adversary that remains a shadow of its former military might, but can cause significant trouble for America? Doesn't the U.S. have enough challenges in Iraq and Afghanistan right now, without making more enemies abroad?


… America is not to blame for the Georgian President Saakashvili's foolish actions, and the Kremlin should recognize this.

The Minneapolis Airport last week began training volunteers to assist visitors who arrive for the GOP Convention. The training is arduous. It takes a lot of time listening on the headphones to the sounds of foot-tapping on a concrete floor to be able to tell the difference between Restless Leg Syndrome and a senator's mating call.
