The Last Request

Poem From The Writer's Almanac : Dostoevsky by Charles Bukowski, from Bone Palace Ballet © Black Sparrow Press.
against the wall, the firing squad ready.
then he got a reprieve.
suppose they had shot Dostoevsky?
before he wrote all that?
I suppose it wouldn't have
mattered
not directly.
there are billions of people who have
never read him and never
will.
but as a young man I know that he
got me through the factories,
past the whores,
lifted me high through the night
and put me down
in a better
place.
even while in the bar
drinking with the other
derelicts,
I was glad they gave Dostoevsky a
reprieve,
it gave me one,
allowed me to look directly at those
rancid faces
in my world,
death pointing its finger,
I held fast,
an immaculate drunk
sharing the stinking dark with
my
brothers.
Check out PAT ROBERTSON'S HIT LIST
By Timothy Noah @ Slate
It isn't only Chavez he wants gone.
" ... the "tightly knit cabal" of "European bankers" whose origins lie with the "Bavarian illuminati." A decade ago, Michael Lind pointed out in the New York Review of Books that these are all crudely anti-Semitic code phrases for "the Jews." According to Robertson, they serve the devil. They're going to have to go, too."
And You can listen to Pat Robertson HERE - or maybe it's one o' those Harry Shearer PARODIES:
Here are some more folks I have been told that Jesus wouldn't mind if they were removed with extreme, but merciful, prejudice: Vincente Fox of Mexico. This fella looks gay, sounds gay, and if it quacks like a duck, you shoot it. Why do you think the Lord has sent so many hurricanes to Mexico lately?
Fidel Castro. You'd think in thirty years the CIA would have developed an exploding cigar that works. And Jacques Chirac of France. Nuff said department. Now, you know that some people are going to take these comments and twist them all out of context. So if you haven't yet doubled your contribution to the 777 Club, this would be a good time to do it. Because you know the secularists who oppose targeted take-outs are sure gonna be doubling their contributions. Let's pray.
As of today, 1,877 Americans have died in Iraquagmire.
DUBYA singled out his very own military mom over the weekend. Tammy Pruett is proudly supporting DUBYA's war with four National Guard sons in Iraq. A fifth son and husband-daddy, Leon, already served and came home safely. Well, score 6-1, in favor of Mrs. Pruett from Idaho over Casey's Mom, the anti-war icon, in Crawford, TX. Of course, those left-wing, anti-war protestors who only want to help our terrorist enemies are BOUND to point out that CASEY SHEEHAN GOT KILLED IN IRAQ!
TELL US AGAIN HOW THOSE ANTI-WAR PROTESTORS ARE SO OFFENSIVE!
A post @ Salon - War Room noted that members of a "Christian church" who believe that God is punishing American troops because their country tolerates homosexuality protested over the weekend at the funerals of two soldiers killed in Iraq.
Members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas -- which is apparently comprised mostly of the family of a man named Fred Phelps, but which echoes, albeit in a slightly uglier fashion, some of the wisdom of Jerry Falwell -- turned out for the funerals of Tennessee National Guard Staff Sgt. Asbury Fred Hawn II, 35, and Spc. Gary Reese Jr., 22, the AP reports. With shouts and signs, the AP says, the church members conveyed messages like "God hates fags" and "God hates you."
In the past the batshit-crazy Minister Phelps has picketed funerals of gays who have dies - even Matt Shepard who was brutalized and murdered in Laramie, Wyoming. There's no indication that thes soldiers, who died fighting the insurgency in Iraq, were anything but straight - which is worth mentioning to show that not only are these protestors insensitive sub-cretins - they're inconsistent even in their crusade of hate.
No matter how many times DUBYA & his fellow war criminals characterize the alternative to "Staying the course" as "Cut & run" - and no matter how many polls present the choices that way - NO SINGLE LAWMAKER OF CONSEQUENCE HAS CALLED FOR IMMEDIATE WITHDRAWAL FROM IRAQ. Not Chuck Hagel, or John Kerry or Hillary Clinton or Russ Feingold, or who else ya got?
ONGOING COMPARISONS BETWEEN IRAQ & 'NAM
PARIS
More journalists have been killed in Iraq since the war began in March 2003 than during the 20 years of conflict in Vietnam, media rights group Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said on Sunday.
Since U.S. forces and its allies launched their campaign in Iraq on March 20, 2003, 66 journalists and their assistants have been killed, RSF said. The latest casualty was a Reuters Television soundman who was shot dead in Baghdad on Sunday while a cameraman with him was wounded and then detained by U.S. soldiers.
The death toll in Iraq compares with a total of 63 journalists in Vietnam, but which was over a period of 20 years from 1955 to 1975, the Paris-based organisation that campaigns to protect journalists said on its Web site.

Wonkette HAS BEEN FOLLOWING THE WALL-TO-WALL HURRICANE COVERAGE:
SHEPARD SMITH: You’re live on FOX News Channel, what are you doing?
MAN: Walking my dogs.
SMITH: Why are you still here? I’m just curious.
MAN: None of your fucking business!
And I was watchin' MSNBC . . .

I remember Liz from a slew of movies in the '40s & '50s. She played the older woman manager hot and bothered by a young rogue Elvis in "Loving You". Hormones churned and burned in my young teen body as I was drawn into her sleepy-eyed gaze, fascinated by the teasing pout of her wet, red lips and, when they parted, her smoky voice.
Several months ago I ordered some DVDs of a bunch of terrific old film noir classics, some of them of "B" picture quality from a discount mail order outfit. Over the weekend, I ripped open the film protecting the DVD folder with a reproduction of a poster for a thriller starring Liz with Dan Duryea, one of my faves among actors who portrayed tough-guys and cowboys, usually outlaws. I opened the case and blinked a couple times, processing the label which promised a gazillion free hours of AOL Internet service! I turned it over and over again and stuck it in the DVD drawer to play. There, on our 51-inch HD screen was the installation menu for AOL. "SHEE-YIT!" I was only out $5. If I were to seek redress for my loss, I'd have to try to figure up the emotional effect of my disappointment when I realized I couldn't view the disk. I won't name the company 'cuz they do a decent job of supplying "oldies" - both music CDs and movie VHS Tapes and DVDs for as little as $5. a copy - in America! Still - CAN'T ANYBODY DO ANYTHING F*&!%#$@ RIGHT ANYMORE?!
