Da Rev constructs an analogy: "ROBBIN’ PETER TO PAY PAUL…"
Oh – THAT old saw! OK. here goes: under present and proposed tax policies most of Peter’s
wages are subject to taxation.
Peter doesn’t qualify for most of the myriad of
tricky loopholes and exotic income shelters on the books. These were expressly
calculated by Paul’s consultants and negotiated with legislators, ostensibly
the people’s representatives, who, as it turns out, are very attentive to
Paul’s consultants and lobbyists because they are bought and paid for by Paul.
As taxes lose progressivity (as in the US over the last 20 years or so), Peter struggles to hold onto that which he has
worked for, little realizing that Paul finds himself with more disposable
income even as he takes advantage – DISPROPORTIONATELY – of taxpayer-supported benefits
from wars, gunboat diplomacy, the Fed's manipulation of the money supply to
guarantee an infinite labor pool and any related poverty, NAFTA, GAT, free
trade agreements, interstate freeways, National Parks, FBI, CIA, an awesome standing military establishment, etc. Meanwhile, regressive taxes which support local roads,
hospitals, schools, local parks, libraries, cops, city and county commissions, fire fighters,
etc. tend to impact the poor and middle class wage-workers - DISPROPORTIONATELY -
especially when viewed as percentage of income.
BUT WAIT – there’s MORE! Peter IV, who hasn’t been born yet,
may or may not inherit family wealth – but he WILL inherit a deteriorated,
inefficient infrastructure, a safety net full o’ holes, compromised national
security, a degraded environment, and, ALMOST CERTAINLY – higher taxes and less
disposable income.
Peter and his future generations are being robbed TODAY!
Paul, who has never given a thought to Peter – let alone – his great-great
grandson – takes the short view (ten years, max.) – focusing on GROWING his
disposable (and inheritable) income.
What’s another old saying? "The man
of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the state, because he derives special advantages from the
mere existence of government."
[President Teddy Roosevelt, speaking to Congress in 1906]
"What is clear is that the
industry of this generation should pay the bills of this generation."
[President Woodrow Wilson]
Meanwhile, wage-workers in circumstances no better than Peter's are continually distracted by peripheral socio-cultural electoral issues and vote against Peter's and their own economic interests to support the party that's bought, paid for, and mostly beholden to Paul. They're easy to spot carrying their signs at political rallies orchestrated by Paul's political allies, cheering the candidates as they dance all around the core facts of tax policy and sing from the CATO Institute hymnal. CHEESES, Tax policy ain't RELIGION!
Or is it? Wage-workers who vote for conservatives - whether to support a religio-fascist agenda or a perceived strong national security position - are WRONG - about so MANY things, perhaps - but for purposes of this analogy, they're WRONG in their blind allegiance to the political component of a powerful wealthy elite. Paul and his allies manipulate the popular news sources of Peter and his fellow wage workers, along with their emotions and ingrained biases in order to ensure that THEY and their offspring will be saddled with the tax liabilities NOT levied on Paul and his fellow elites - thereby leaving unpaid the co$ts to the nation and future generations of their short-sighted focus only on maximizing profits. Tax policy is rigged and the wealthiest people in this country SUCK - uh,
excuse that, please - I mean - the rich reap more benefits from the
*"gummint" than everybody else (*the "gummint", for our
purposes here = the tax coffers).
WAKE UP WAGE-WORKERS OF AMERICA - WE'RE ALL GETTIN' SCREWED!!
